Biography
Alixandra Summitt is an
accomplished
artist and teacher whose work has achieved wide
recognition. Summitt
is listed in the Who’s Who of American
Women, and the World’s
Who’s Who of Women. She has been chosen to create
the award
medallion struck yearly for inductees into the
Michigan Women’s
Hall of Fame. Summitt’s commissions include a
portrait of Elizabeth
Belen, founder of Greater Lansing Visiting Nurse
Services, which can
be viewed at GLVNS offices on Michigan Avenue with a series of
Summitt’s paintings combining contemporary and historical themes.
Summit had her first one-woman show at Northwestern Michigan
College, where she also organized a presentation on women’s art as
part of the exhibition. Selections from her last one person show are
on view in the gallery’s website. Her next exhibit, a peace show,
will be at the Belen Gallery of Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame.
Prints from Summitt’s selected paintings, collages and pastels are
available from Bohemia Gallery. Her painting and sculpture integrates
nature and the mythic dimension; the goal of her art is to find what
feeds the human spirit and makes us whole.
Summitt, who earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Adult and Continuing Education from Michigan State University, has taught courses in Drawing and Women’s Art in Traverse City and is a founder of the Lansing ‘Connections Collective,” whose purposes are to create a public identity for women artists and to bring woman artists together.
Summitt is not only an artist but also a practitioner of alternative modes of healing and a worker for peace, activities that for her are closely connected. She and the late Dr. Lucile Portwood founded the Portwood Institute for Art and Healing (PIAH), which offers Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, as well as other relaxing modalities, including Scenar Technology, an Energy Homeostasis Balancing unit (EHB) that deals directly with frequency modulations leading to enhanced performance. Dr. Summitt is a Certified Healing Codes Practitioner and was ordained an Emissary of Peace in The Beloved Community in 2008.
